Downeast Horizons Clients Pray, Worship and Serve at Local Churches

Downeast Horizons clients are Episcopalians, Unitarians, Catholics, Baptists, and more. Many individuals, like 40-year-old John Hayes, devote extra time to their churches in the form of service.

Religious worship is important in the life of many of the individuals Downeast Horizons serves. As in the general population, denominational involvement varies. Downeast Horizons clients are Episcopalians, Unitarians, Catholics, Baptists, and more. Many individuals, like 40-year-old John Hayes, devote extra time to their churches in the form of service. John, a resident at one of Downeast Horizons’ eight assisted living homes, spends each Sunday serving as greeter and usher at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Ellsworth. Thirty-plus-year members of the parish, John and his mother, Anne, worship regularly each Sunday. When asked why he goes to church, John replied: “I have faith in God…and I like hanging with Father Mower.” Father Mower is the pastor at St. Joseph’s.

Since 1974, Downeast Horizons has been devoted to the establishment of community-based services for local adults and children with developmental disabilities and their families. Downeast Horizons is a non-profit organization helping to serve these needs in Hancock and Penobscot counties.
