ELLSWORTH, Maine (WABI) – Downeast Scenic Railroad serves passengers from all over the country.
There was a trip set aside Friday for a local group.
We tagged along with folks from Downeast Horizons.
Welcome to Downeast Scenic Railroad.
“I’ve been working on the railroad all the live long day.”
“I’ve been pushing her and pushing her to come and she’s like OK. What do you think so far? She pulled my leg you know I love her, I love my sister over here. She’s lovely. And you know we’re having a good time.”
Folks from Downeast Horizons traveled on the historic Calais Branch line.
“This is fun! Thank you Downeast Horizons.”
Riding through Ellsworth Falls and Washington Junction, taking in all the sights and sounds.
“Trees! Trees? And seeing all the wildlife that Maine has to offer.”
Some, even got to work behind the scenes.
“Assistant Mikey Grennier. You have permission to reattach the train to the box cars.”
“This is the conductor saying it’s ok to proceed to Washington Junction.”
“It’s all volunteer it’s a very good dedicated group.”
But staff say opportunities like this can be therapeutic and helpful in the long-run.
“So in the future, when they’re not with our staff and they’re out in the community, and they start feeling a little bit uncomfortable in the crowd, they won’t be so bad. This is not just a ride on the train. It is ride on the train with a purpose.”
“I really love it.”
